Overcoming my anxiety has been a challenge I’ve struggled with. Improving my situation took plenty of time, effort, and multiple lifestyle changes. When talking to friends and family, I realized that so many individuals deal with anxiety as well, so I thought sharing my tips would be beneficial.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always struggled with anxiety in some way. Generally, the symptoms of my anxiety are heightened I’m overwhelmed with too much going on or when I feel like I don’t have enough to do. I consider myself a perfectionist who always has to be in control and everything has to be planned out in advance (definitely not a we’ll plan as we go kind of girl). When life takes a wrong or unexpected turn, I tend to freak out and prepare for the worse possible scenario. I typically try to do everything I can to fix the problem even though most of the time, it’s out of my control. Another situation where I get anxious is whe n I think about the future. Even though I’m very young at 23 years old, I sometimes feel that time goes by so fast and I have to start planning for the future as soon as possible. I then get stressed because I feel like there’s so much more I should be doing with my life that I’m not.
I go through phases where I’m feeling excellent then all of a sudden I struggle with a variety of the symptoms of anxiety. Not getting enough sleep, nervousness, and changes in my appetite. Sound relatable? This is because managing everyday stress can be daunting at times, and excessive work pressure can lead to anxiety, depression and a lot of other health issues.
Anxiety is quite a widespread issue these days; however, the intensity varies in every individual. The first step is to overcome the negative feelings by convincing yourself that it is a typical emotional state, and it is curable. I know that anxiety is an uncomfortable and irritating phase, which can even make a healthy person vulnerable but trust me; IT WILL PASS TOO. No matter, for how long you feel depress and low; eventually, it will be gone, and everything will be back to normal.
Below, I am sharing few tips that can help you out in fighting those negative vibes. Have a look at these anxiety tips and improve how your feeling today!
1. Start Deep-breathing Therapy
Did you know that you can calm your body and mind with the slow, deep breathing? It’s a life changer, just follow these easy-peasy steps:
- Close your eyes while sitting and pay full attention to the breathing.
- Breathe comfortably through your nostrils. Place one hand on the chest, and the other one on your stomach. Take a deep breath and count to four, then exhale and count to four. The hand on your stomach should go inwards while inhaling and vice versa.
- Focus on the sensation of your breathing and forget everything else.
- Repeat this process as many times as you wish, and you can do it at any time of the day.
2. Practice Self-Care
Self-care is very important for your mental peace and feeling your best! Taking some time to relax and focus on yourself, will make you less stressed. Get a massage, skin/hair treatment, mani-pedi or even a haircut. You can also treat yourself with some at-home beauty treatments like a face mask or at home mani-pedi. If an aspect of the way you look is negatively affecting you, make a game plan to make small realistic changes. Go for a jog, purchase a new face mask or treatment, or reduce the amount the sugar you’re eating. It’s all about making small gradual changes so that you’re able to keep up with your plan.
3. Stay Fit
Exercise, physical activities and even simply walking contribute to a healthy lifestyle. In addition to this, healthy eating habits can benefit your mental health a lot. Don’t forget to regularly take some time out, and indulge yourself in any type of physical activity, even jogging or regular walk will do the job for an overall healthier mental state. Going on a long walk or jog, makes you feel amazing after you’ve had a stressful day. It allows you to focus on your surroundings and forget about what’s been bothering you.
4. Distance Yourself from Your Phone and Other Devices
Overusing your electronics can negatively impact your mental health. Excessive use of your cell phone and spending long hours in front of your laptop or TV can hinder your abilities to socialize face to face. With social media being so popular, it’s easy to get caught up in things that aren’t important. Social media is a huge cause of anxiety for some people as well. Individuals feel like their life has to be picture perfect all the time when that isn’t realistic or healthy. To avoid social anxiety, try to spend less time on your cell phone, takes breaks from social media and take small steps to socializing more in person.
5. Spend Time with Positive People
It is said that ‘a person is known by the company they keep’ and I couldn’t agree more. Our friendships can have a great impact on our personality and how we feel about ourselves. So, choose your friends wisely. If a relationship makes you feel sad or insecure about yourself, it’s not worth sacrificing your long-term well-being. Don’t let other’s negativity influence you.
6. Focus on Yourself and Not Others
Be selfish for a change and take the time to do what will make you happy. Many individuals waste time worrying about other’s opinions and often neglect themselves. Life isn’t about impressing or being the best all the time. It’s all about being the person you want to be without influences. Surround yourself with people who understand the importance of your goals. If doing what you love will make you not able to see your friends as often, that’s okay, your “true” friends will always be there for you.
7. Realistic Goal Setting
Setting goals that are unattainable can cause you constant anxiety and disappoint. There’s nothing worse than constantly feeling like you’ve failed when you shouldn’t feel that way. I myself, am guilty of feeling disappointed in myself when something doesn’t work out the way I expect it to. It’s easy to be overly hard on yourself instead of being optimistic. Research, write your ideas down, and take the time to think about the goals that will make you the happiest. I encourage you to always have big dreams just be realistic of the steps it takes to achieve them. If you truly work your way up, anyone can achieve anything they aspire to.
8. Talk to Someone and Consider Seeing a Professional
Anxiety is a common problem faced by a lot of people. It is not something to be ashamed of. Talk about it with your friends, speak your heart out, and that’s how you will feel relaxed. Fortunately, if life becomes too stressful, there are a bunch of specialized doctors who are easily available to help you out as well. Consult with an expert and see all your options and how to improve your situation.
Your well-being and health should always come first, no matter what the circumstances are. Don’t put so much pressure on your mind because that can make you feel constantly ill. I feel like we spend so much time worrying about what we should be doing opposed to what we can. Do your best to set realistic goals for yourself to avoid all of life’s anxieties and stress.
I hope these tips can benefit you today. Stay healthy, stay peaceful, and enjoy life!
