TV Shows are my ultimate mood booster. Coming home, putting on my pjs, and getting ready to catch up on one of my favorite show brings me so much happiness. TV helps you destress and relax after a long day, it’s just so therapeutic! Finding the right shows for you may take time and a lot of patience, but once you do, you have found something to always look forward to. I have realized that I have no problem talking to my friends or to strangers, since I’m into such a large variety of shows. I genuinely love hearing what people’s theories are about different story plots and all about their favorite characters.
My favorite types of shows, which will be apparent below, are crime and horror related shows. I’ve always been a huge fan of Halloween and scary movies so it only makes sense. I really enjoy the mystery aspect and suspense of not knowing what’s going to happen next.
Without any further ado, let me share the list of my most favorite TV shows with you.
* This list is in no particular order.
1.) How to Get Away with Murder
Similar to: Law and Order, Big Little Lies
Where to Watch: ABC and Netflix
If your looking for a show that’s going to keep you in suspense I definitely recommend How to Get Away with Murder. This show is filled with a dynamic plot and characters that will keep you on your tip toes. At times this show did give me anxiety because I felt like everyone was going to get caught but the show is never boring. I’ve heard people complain about the show not accurately portraying a defense attorney’s life or how law school is yet it’s just a TV show meant to entertain rather than learn, so it’s a thumbs up in my book.
2.) American Horror Story
Similar to: American Psycho, Silence of the Lambs
Where to Watch: FX and Netflix
American Horror Story is the perfect mixture of horror and drama. This show is one of my obsessions. I love the intriguing story lines and how the main cast plays different characters in each season. Each season is a completely different story and theme so you don’t need to watch seasons in order. My favorite seasons were Haunted House, Asylum, and Hotel. Roanoke was my least favorite season just because I felt like it took a long time for it to get somewhere and the episodes were a bit repetitive.
3.) Jane the Virgin
Similar to: Spanish Telenovelas
Where to Watch: CWTV and Netflix
Jane the Virgin is literally a parody of a Spanish soap opera or telenovela and it puts me in a such a good mood. This show’s characters are so relatable and will make you laugh. The plot is full of twists that are overdramatic yet work well with the telenovela theme. If you are looking for a fun and cute show to watch with your family, I definitely recommend Jane the Virgin.
4.) Orange is the New Black
Where to Watch: Netflix
I never thought I would enjoy Orange is the New Black but I find it so interesting and entertaining. This show has given me a glimpse of what prison is somewhat like and the stories behind the women in prison. If you love drama and are looking for something new and unique to learn about (aka prison) you’ll enjoy this show.
5.) The Bachelor/Bachelorette
Similar to: Famously Single, Rock of Love
Where to Watch: ABC and Apple TV Shows
Definitely my guilty pleasure. I personally find the idea of getting engaged after dating someone for two months while dating multiple other people not the best idea. I don’t really expect these relationships to last but this show has me hooked. All the drama and date ideas have me obsessed and I wouldn’t dare miss an episode.
6.) Game of Thrones
Similar to: Harry Potter (but with more adult content)
Where to Watch: HBO
I decided to start Game of Thrones because literally everyone watches it and wanted to find out what all the hype was about. I quickly found out that the storyline is incredible and filled with twists you’d never expect. From an artistic perspective the show’s scenic backgrounds and costumes are beautiful. I feel like this show has a little bit of everything for everyone. There’s drama, gore, love, war and so much in between. After watching this series every week, I completely understand the obsession over the show and have become a huge fan myself.
7.) Gossip Girl
Similar to: 90210, The Hills
Where to Watch: Netflix
Gossip Girl is a must watch for anyone who loves high school/college drama. The show focuses on the lives of New York teens who are impacted by rumors and secrets revealed about them at different points in the plot. The characters in this show like Blair (my favorite), are so overly glamorous that you may end up envious of their lives. The character’s situations and problems aren’t always relatable but all the drama will definitely have you hooked. One of the main reasons I loved watching this show was that it always kept me wondering who was going to date who next.
8.) Pretty Little Liars
Similar to: Clique Series, Gossip Girl
Where to Watch: Netflix and Freeform
I can honestly say I have a love/hate relationship with Pretty Little Liars. I’ve been a fan of the show since the beginning and never missed an episode. I loved the first four seasons of the show but after felt like they were just trying to keep the show on for as long as possible. I felt like literally everyone on the show had been A or could be the big A in the end. Even though wondering who A was all the time did get annoying, I still loved watching the shows because I loved the characters and am a huge fan of the main actors. Overall, if you are a fan of the books or enjoy mystery shows, I definitely recommend it. If you get easily annoyed of repetitiveness, I don’t recommend it.
9.) The Fosters
Where to Watch: Freeform and Netflix
The Fosters is such a unique show that gives you a glimpse of the struggles of foster children and their adoptive parents. This show tackles so many issues that are currently affecting so many families. I love how relatable the characters are and all the obstacles they face together as a family.
10.) Big Little Lies
Where to Watch: HBO
The first thing that attracted me to watching Big Little Lies was the amazing actresses. I knew that if Nicole Kidman agreed to be in it, it had to be good. This show is full of mystery and has an intriguing plot. For me personally, the show was a bit slow at times but the great acting and storyline make up for it.
